Paid for Parking Machine Removal Trial

Overview

We would like your views on plans to improve our environment and save money by reviewing the number of paid for parking machines.

What?

As part of a trial this summer, we’ll be temporarily taking paid for parking machines out of service in several areas across Camden. During the trial, machines will be covered up and motorists will need to pay for parking using mobile payment.

Why are we doing this?

The aim of the trial is to get your views on removing the machines and paying for parking through the mobile payment service.

The proposal is part of our commitment to find better ways to deliver the best value services across the borough. We want to focus on Camden’s economy, allowing easier access to local businesses. We also want to create a more sustainable and attractive environment for visitors and residents by removing street clutter, reducing congestion and improving air quality.

Camden has almost 250 paid for parking machines. They take up space on the street, are prone to damage and are costly to maintain. Keeping the machines working and collecting cash from them requires a fleet of service vehicles adding congestion and pollution to the borough.

In recent years, there has been a radical change in the way customers in Camden pay for short-term parking. This has seen big reductions in cash and card payments at parking machines and an increase in mobile payments using the RingGo service.

Mobile payment is quick and easy: you just need a payment card and a phone or smart device. Using the service offers benefits that paying at a machine does not:

  • live maps and navigation to available parking spaces, allowing you to find a bay more easily
  • text reminders for parking session expiry, peace of mind for keeping track of your time
  • the ability to extend a parking session remotely, allowing you to top up without returning to your car
  • account management, save favourite locations and download receipts
  • a single registration provides access to paid for parking in more than 400 towns and cities throughout the UK

How to make a mobile payment?
