Overview

A project group called Digital Place – A Corporate GIS Strategy has been established to review the council’s use of mapped data and we would like you to take part in an online survey. This survey is important not just to capture the use of our current mapping solutions but the potential for its use in your service. If you can complete the survey or visit Yammer to make suggestions this will help to support the project.

The benefits

There have been many requests from services for more information or training which shows there’s a growing need for mapped data. Whether you use maps in your day-to-day activities or not, mapped data gives the Council a great opportunity to improve services for our customer. For example:

  • signposting for all services using a geographical base. For instance, if a resident has just moved into the borough and set up a Camden Account, the Council knows they are a new resident and if they have children. The Camden Account can signpost them to the nearest schools and their Ofsted ratings and show their nearest doctor.
  • putting all public realm and planning schemes – such as HS2 and the West End Project – into one map that can display the area where work is taking place, rather than pointing to one address. The map might be searchable by area and date so you can see the phases of a development over time
  • overlaying data such as roadworks, parking suspensions, freight and traffic movements, congestion and air quality, we could map areas of high activity more effectively
  • a central asset management plan would provide depreciation data, routine and unplanned maintenance, financial data and trends related to assets
  • a central mechanism that maps reportable incidences would be able to work with back office systems. This would prevent duplication and where required direct a works order to the relevant contractor or team. It would show when something has already been reported, and provide feedback on when work is scheduled and when it’s complete.

The strategy will ensure the above data will be managed and made available to the public and internal services so we can share data – within strict Data Protection Act controls – to improve service and share ideas and solutions.

Do you use Magic?

There is another reason for doing the survey. If you use Magic, please ensure that you  complete the survey as Magic is no longer supported by Pitney Bowes and we’ll need to replace it at some point in the future.
