Road Safety and Public Realm Improvements

We are seeking your views on the Council’s proposals to improve road safety on the streets surrounding the newly rebuilt Netley Primary School and Everton Buildings located on Stanhope Street and William Road, NW1 3EX.

The Netley development project is one part of a 15 year Community Investment Programme by Camden with local people to identify ways to improve some of the borough’s buildings and estates. This will bring the Council’s schools up to modern standards, provide new homes, and improve community services, streets, parks and public spaces.

The school has been rebuilt with new facilities in time for the autumn term in September 2014. New housing is also being built above the school and improvements made to existing buildings to create a better public realm. The new school and homes also require improvements to the existing streets, especially as the school entrances have moved and because more people will walk to and from the new housing development.

The Council’s traffic engineers have undertaken site visits and agreed with the Netley School project officers to propose a number of changes to the streets which will improve road safety for pupils and parents travelling to and from school, and residents in the area.

We are proposing to widen the footway outside the school and raise the junctions before the school to calm the traffic and provide new crossing points. This will require relocating some residents parking from Stanhope Street to William Road, lowering and slightly moving the zebra crossing and the loss of one tree, but we would aim to replace this loss elsewhere.

What happens next

The Assistant Director for Environment and Transport will make a decision whether or not to proceed with the scheme. Under the Local Government (Access to Information) Act 1985, we may not treat your questionnaire or letter confidentially, as it will be available for public inspection.  Please only write to us about the consultation issue.  If you want to comment on any other matter, please use a separate letter.  If approved, we are planning to make changes by March 2015.
