Overview

PROPOSED PLAY STREET ROAD CLOSURES ON ROCHESTER SQUARE

Scheme Reference: Rochester Square_PS16/17

The Council is writing to seek your views on its proposal to prohibit traffic through Rochester Square in order for the street to be used by children for play (Play Street), as designated by Section 29 of the Road Traffic Regulations Act 1988, on the first Sunday of every month, between the hours of 12:00pm -6:30pm for a maximum of 4 hours. The road closures on Rochester Square would be between 25 Rochester Square and Rochester Square’s junction with Stratford Villas. The operation of the closure would be undertaken by local residents’ and would be via the use of free-standing ‘road closed’ signs as well as advance warning signage and barriers.  Parking will not be suspended and access to adjacent properties will be maintained by marshals, who will allow entry and exit for vehicle access during the time of the closure. This follows an application submitted by local residents’ to the Council for the introduction of a Play Street on Rochester Square.

Play Streets help to deliver a range of Council objectives. In particular they support the needs of children for informal play, learning and development, as well as physical activity, and getting to know their neighbours in a safe environment close to home.
