Consultation on permanently keeping the Electric Vehicle Charging Points in Hampstead Town Ward

Closed 1 Dec 2023

Opened 9 Nov 2023

Overview

In April 2022, Camden Council alongside Trojan Energy and other partners, installed a new type of on-street electric vehicle charging technology in Parliament Hill, Willoughby Road, Denning Road, Willow Road and Downshire Hill on a trial basis.

With this system, a single feeder pillar (see image below) is installed which supplies multiple sub surface charge points (up to 15) along the street. Drivers wishing to charge their vehicles use ‘a lance’ to connect to the charge point.

We are now consulting on our proposal to keep the 45 electric vehicle charging points in the Hampstead Town Ward area.

Why your views matter

You views matter so that we can make a decision on whether or not to now keep the 45 electric vehicle charging points in the Hampstead Town Ward.

Below is an example of what the charge points look like when they are in use and when they are not as well as the box which is called a feeder pillar which sits nearby to hold equipment and provide power.

In addition to the charge points we also deployed Trojan Energy DEICER technology, which allows drivers to obtain real-time information about charge point availability via an online portal. The DEICER technology uses on-street sensors to detect availability of a parking space adjacent to a charge point. The image below shows the extent of the views of the DEICER technology.

Additional information on the charge points can be accessed at:  Trojan Energy website.

The trial period for the charge points and DEICER technology has now come to an end.

In line with our commitment to create a network of electric vehicle charge points that both meets the existing demand and encourages a switch to electric vehicles, we are proposing to keep the charge points in the streets on a permanent basis.

The installation of electric vehicle charging points can affect anybody living in, or visiting an area, so we seeking the views of everyone - whether or not you took part in the trial scheme or own an electric vehicle.

We will carefully consider comments received in response to these proposals and include them in a report accompanying recommendations which will go to the Cabinet Member for a Sustainable Camden for consideration in December 2023.
