During February and March 2024 we consulted on changes proposed for a Safe and Healthy Streets scheme in the Hadley Street and Castle Road area.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to share their views. We had 23 responses and following the consultation, we have made the decision to implement the proposed changes permanently.

The new scheme will now be implemented and a notification will go to all local residents and businesses. You can read the decision reports relating to this, and our feedback to the consultation responses in the decision report

Overview

Hadley Street runs from Prince of Wales Road in the North to Lewis Street in the South with a motor vehicle restriction via a series of bollards and a fire gate at the northern arm of the junction where Hadley Street meets Castle Road. We would like to make it easier to travel by bike locally, so people who cycle can access the wider cycle network .We have also heard from disabled people that the ramp on the existing crossing is steep and adjusting the ramp would make it easier for those who use tricycles and other adapted bicycles. We also want to increase the amount of plants  in the area. This is in line with Camden’s ambition to improve cycling access and priority and also improve pedestrian accessibility in the area.

A scheme drawing for the proposed measures can be found in the Related section at the bottom of this page. We are proposing the following changes:

  • Widen the pavement at the location of the existing motor vehicle restriction to create a smoother ramp for those on bikes.
  • Remove the existing fire gate and replace it with removable bollards to improve cycle accessibility.
  • Install cycle stands and trees on the new widened pavement to improve cycle parking facilities and amount of planting in the area.
  • Widening the pavement on Castle Road outside the Tapping The Admiral Pub to improve the look and feel of the area and planting a new tree.

  • Introduce 4 new secure cycle hangers in the area to improve storage facilities. Two on the north side of Castle Road to the west of Hadley Street and two opposite no.34 Hadley Street. Removing 5.6m of existing pay by phone parking on Castle Road and 5.2m of residents parking on Hadley Street.

Why your views matter

Your views are important in providing feedback both on the proposed scheme as a whole and elements of it, and we would therefore welcome your responses on the pages that follow.

We will be pleased to hear your views on the proposals as well as any alternative suggestions or objections you may have to any aspect of what we are proposing.

To view the plans and find out more about what each proposal would achieve, click on the links in the Related Section at the bottom of this page.

After the consultation, a decision report will be produced and published online via our website. Local residents and stakeholders will be notified of the outcome. The report will consider a broad range of information including officer observations, consultation responses, relevant policies, and other data/information.

What happens next

We propose to construct the measures using a permanent Traffic Management Order. If the proposals are approved, we would carefully monitor the impacts of the scheme on Hadley Street and Castle Road.
