PROPOSAL: Minor Parking Amendments on Bedford Row (Holborn & Covent Garden Ward)

We are writing to seek your views on our proposals to create 6 new diplomatic vehicle only parking spaces (30m) on Bedford Row. The request for these bays has been received from the Malaysian High Commission, whose consulate offices have recently relocated to Bedford Row.

Under a long-stand agreement, all London Boroughs have agreed to allocate diplomatic parking bays to the diplomatic community where off-street parking facilities are not available.

The number of spaces the Council decides to provide each consulate is based on a quote and recommendation provided to the Council by the Foreign and Common Wealth Office’s Diplomatic Division (FCO).  Due to limited kerbside space Camden applies this criteria strictly across the borough.

Camden officers have considered the request from the FCO and are proposing to allocate 6 parking spaces which can only be used by diplomatic vehicles for the Malaysian High Commission. The creation of these bays will require a number of changes, these are outlined below.  The cost of providing these will be paid for by the High Commission.

1. Removal of t 5 metre paid for parking bays (2 car parking spaces) and 10 metres of existing single yellow line from outside 52 Bedford Row. This will provide 4 car parking spaces for diplomatic only vehicles (20 metres)
2. Removal of one 10metre paid for parking bay (2 car parking spaces). This will provide 2 car parking spaces for use by diplomatic vehicles only ( 10 metres).
3. In order compensate for the loss in paid for parking bays, a new 25metre paid for parking bay (5 car parking spaces) is proposed outside 49-51 Bedford Row. To accommodate this the following changes are necessary:

• 5 metre paid for parking bay (1 car parking space) located outside 1 Bedford Row) will be removed and converted to single yellow line.  This is to ensure that vehicles can pass through safely.
• The car club bay (2 car parking spaces) located outside 48 Bedford Way will be moved to outside 46 Bedford Way, existing replacing single yellow line.

There will be no net loss in marked parking bays as a result of the above proposals, however there will be some reduction in existing single yellow line provision. Both existing and proposed parking layout drawings can be found by clicking HERE

What happens next

Who is being consulted?

All affected property frontages inclusive of businesses, local groups, statutory groups and ward councillors.

While it will not be possible to reply to your individually, all comments will be taken into account. At the end of this consultation period, a report will be written analysing the comments received and officers’ recommendations. This report will be presented to the Director of Regeneration and Planning (Supporting Communities Directorate) who will make a decision whether or not to proceed with the scheme.
