Glenmore Road and Howitt Road Safe and Healthy Streets Consultation
Overview
We are seeking your views on proposals to introduce improvements to the junctions of Glenmore Road with Glenloch Road and Howitt Road with Glenilla Road.
We want our streets to have more safe space for everyone to walk and cycle, for children to get to and from school safely and healthily, for businesses to be able to flourish, to reduce carbon emissions from vehicles and for you to be breathing cleaner air.
We want our communities to be prepared for the changing climate and provide a lasting legacy of greener, safer, and healthier travel with streets resilient against the impacts of climate change.
In line with our Camden Transport Strategy, Climate Action Plan, and Clean Air Strategy and Clean Air Action Plan, and to continue supporting safe, healthy, and active travel, we have been making changes across Camden as part of our Safe and Healthy Streets Programme.
As 69% of households in Camden do not own a car we know that safe and easy walking, cycling and scooting routes are more important than ever. Supporting and encouraging those who are able to walk and cycle, by creating safer streets will ensure that there is more space available on public transport and on our roads for those who need it the most.
Introduction
We are proposing changes at the junction of Glenmore Road with Glenloch Road and Howitt Road with Glenilla Road that will make crossing these junctions safer and more accessible for all. We also want to introduce planting and rain gardens that will reduce local flood risk and increase local biodiversity. You can see an example of rain gardens in the photo guide.
Currently the junction of Glenmore Road with Glenloch Road is approximately 28 meters wide and the junction of Howitt Road with Glenilla Road is 24 meters wide. This means that people who want to cross Glenmore Road and Howitt Road have a large distance to cross, often with parked cars blocking the crossing point. We want to make improvements to both junctions, that would make them safer and healthier for everyone with improved road safety, more space for people and greening elements which would reduce local flood risk increase the local biodiversity.
A summary of the measures proposed are below:
- Glenmore Road junction with Glenloch Road: Shorten the crossing distance for pedestrians from approximately 28 metres wide to approximately 12 metres and install a raised continuous pedestrian crossing across Glenmore Road at the junction with Glenloch Road widening the existing pavement, to make it easier and safer for pedestrians to cross the road at this section of the junction. You can see an example of a continous crossing in the photo guide.
- Howitt Road junction with Glenilla Road: Shorten the crossing distance for pedestrians from approximately 25 metres wide to approximately 8 metres wide and install a raised continuous pedestrian crossing across Howitt Road at the junction with Glenilla Road by widening the existing pavement to make it easier and safer for pedestrians to cross the road at this section of the junction. You can see an example of a continous crossing in the photo guide
- Cycle stands, rain gardens and new trees would be introduced at both locations above, which would reduce local flood risk and increase local biodiversity. You can see an example of rain gardens in the photo guide
- Introduction of double Yellow lines with no loading/waiting around both junctions, to ensure space for pedestrians that would otherwise be blocked by vehicles at both locations.
- To facilitate these changes it is proposed to remove 15 resident permit holder parking spaces and approximately 20 metres of single Yellow line across the two locations.
