Overview

We are seeking your views on changes proposed on North Gower Street.  We're proposing to make the pedestrianised section of North Gower Street a greener and more resilient space to flooding.

We want our streets to have more safe space for everyone to walk and cycle, for children to get to and from school safely and healthily, for businesses to be able to flourish, to reduce carbon emissions from vehicles and for you to be breathing cleaner air.

We want our communities to be prepared for the changing climate and provide a lasting legacy of greener, safer, and healthier travel with streets resilient against the impacts of climate change.

In line with our Camden Transport Strategy, Climate Action Plan, and Clean Air Strategy and Clean Air Action Plan, and to continue supporting safe, healthy, and active travel following the pandemic, we have been making changes across Camden as part of our Safe and Healthy Streets Programme.

We want to transform Euston into a place for people with attractive, healthy, accessible, and safe streets for everyone. To do this we're creating ideas for transforming this section of North Gower Street by creating new planted up rain gardens, installing green walls and working with local groups to reinstate the community mural along the former school gymnasium.

About the proposed changes on North Gower Street

As part of our project, we're proposing changes on North Gower Street to create rain gardens, install living walls, laying new paving and installing art created by the community.

On North Gower Street we are proposing to:

  • Add 8 new rain gardens. Rain gardens soak up water during heavy rainfall, act as great local habitats for wildlife, help improve air quality and how the area looks and feels.
  • Install living walls (where plants are grown on walls) along the former gymnasium hall
  • Improve the lighting to make the area feel safer
  • Use art and different surface materials to give the street its own identity
  • Maintain a high quality through-route for cyclists

Adding new rain gardens will create more areas which could soak up water during heavy rainfall. They would also contribute to improvements in air quality, improve local biodiversity by adding new habitats for nature and improve how the area looks and feels.

A flower bed is set into the widened pavement filled with different plants and flowers
