Parliament Hill - Safe and healthy Streets Consultation

Closed 20 Sep 2023

Opened 23 Aug 2023

Results updated 26 Oct 2023

During October 2023 we consulted on changes proposed for Parliament Hill.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to share their views. We had 55 responses and following the consultation, we have made the decision to add the new rain gardens.

The gardens will now be implemented from 6 November and a letter (PDF) has gone to all local residents and businesses. You can read the decision reports relating to this, and our feedback to the consultation responses in the decision report.

Overview

We want our streets to have more safe space for everyone to walk and cycle, for children to get to and from school safely and healthily, for you to be breathing cleaner air, to reduce carbon emissions from vehicles and for businesses to flourish.

We want our communities to be prepared for the changing climate and provide a lasting legacy of greener, safer and healthier travel with streets resilient against climate change.

Why your views matter

In 2021, the Parliament Hill area suffered from significant flooding.

We are adding more plants and trees across our streets to help minimise water runoff. One way to do this is to increase the amount of on street water storage to soak up water when severe rains arrive, which the climate crisis makes more likely.

To reduce risk in the Parliament Hill area, we’ve identified an opportunity to install two new “rain gardens”. Rain gardens capture and store rainwater, act as great local habitats for wildlife, and improve the look and feel of an area. Each rain garden would replace two car parking spaces and be similar in design to the image on the other side of this leaflet.

We also know how important it is to reduce disruption through roads being dug up. We’re therefore proposing to work in partnership with Cadent Gas to add in the new rain gardens while they carry out their own work to upgrade metal gas pipes to safer and more reliable plastic pipes. This would save 2 weeks of disruption. Cadent’s work will begin in October, so we are consulting with you now to hear about what you think about us adding rain gardens ahead of their work.
