Overview

The Council is seeking your views on its proposal for a new Play Street on Roderick Road. Local residents have applied to the council with a petition to ask us to consult on introducing a Play Street on Roderick Road.

Play streets aim to reclaim road space to allow children to play, which supports the needs of children for play, exercise, learning and development. Camden has already designated several Play Streets across the borough. These have proved very popular, such as at Islip Street and Ryland Road in Kentish Town, and a number of Play Streets are in operation across London. The Play Street scheme is an initiative set up by a charity called London Play and the Department for Health.

Play Streets meet a number of the Council’s objectives such as improving air quality, as the temporary closure acts as a deterrent for vehicles using the street. This promotes the use of healthier forms of transport, which in turn helps to reduce traffic congestion. Residents already living on Play Streets also tell us it is a good way to bring neighbours together.

The proposal involves prohibiting traffic through Roderick Road for the street to be used by children for play (Play Street), as designated by Section 29 of the Road Traffic Regulations Act 1984. The Council would close Roderick Road, from the junction of Mansfield Road to the junction of Savernake Road, on the 2nd Sunday of each month between 3pm-6pm. Local residents would set the closure up by using freestanding ‘road closed’ signs combined with advance warning signage and barriers.

Parking bays will not be suspended and access to adjacent properties will be maintained by marshals, who will allow for entry and exit of vehicles belonging to residents during the time the street is closed.  The proposed play street closure is illustrated on the plan below.
