Gordon Street - Proposed new location of zebra crossing

Closed 22 Jan 2016

Opened 14 Dec 2015

Overview

The Council is proposing to move the zebra crossing from outside 29 Gordon Square to outside 26 Gordon Square, 15 metres south of its existing location.

The Gordon Street area is a mix of residential and educational properties and provides access for the Wellcome Trust Research Institute, a variety of University buildings and also serves as a link to Euston Road and the nearby Euston Station.

University College London (UCL) is planning to build a new student centre next to the Bloomsbury Theatre on Gordon Street and it is projected that once completed, the number of pedestrians using Gordon Street will increase as the new centre will be opened throughout the course of the year and will attract more students.

To meet future demand once the new building is opened and create a safer environment during construction, we are proposing to move the zebra crossing to outside 26 Gordon Square. A pedestrian movement survey was organised to find out where pedestrians cross the road (mainly consists of university students) and the data indicated that the location proposed is where the largest groups of pedestrians cross. This was also confirmed during site visits undertaken by officers.
