Fairhazel Gardens and Loudoun Road Area Safe and Healthy Streets Consultation
Overview
To answer the consultation questions, click the link at the bottom of this page.
We want our streets to have more safe space for everyone to walk and cycle, for children to get to and from school safely and healthily, for businesses to be able to flourish, to reduce carbon emissions from vehicles and for you to be breathing cleaner air.
We want our streets to provide a lasting legacy of greener, safer, healthier travel.
As 69% of households in Camden do not own a car and public transport use remains much lower than before the pandemic, we know that safe and easy walking, cycling and scooting routes are more important than ever. Supporting and encouraging those who are able to walk and cycle, by creating safer streets, will ensure that there is more space available on public transport and on our roads for those who need it the most.
In line with our Camden Transport Strategy, Climate Action Plan, and Clean Air Action Plan, and to continue supporting safe, healthy, and active travel following the pandemic, we have been making changes across Camden as part of our Safe and Healthy Streets Programme.
Why your views matter
We want to improve the streets around the Fairhazel Gardens and the Loudoun Road area. We would like to make changes that:
- Improve the safety and accessibility for walking, wheeling and scooting on the streets in this area.
- Improve the look and feel of the streets in the area, and make it more attractive for people who live, work, and spend time here.
- Improve the biodiversity of the area by introducing more plants and trees.
Fairhazel Gardens and Loudoun Road
Fairhazel Gardens and Loudoun Road connect to a roundabout with a total of six exits. Fairhazel Gardens offers local amenities such as cafes, restaurants and dry cleaners. Loudoun Road also offers a café at the junction with Belsize Road as well as the main access point to South Hampstead Overground Station.
Across this area we are proposing to improve crossing facilities for those who walk, wheel and scoot. We are also proposing to introduce SuDs (Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems). SuDs look like areas of planting and have many important benefits including:
Environmental: providing shade, reducing urban heat, improving Rain Gardens would enhance climate resilience, improve surface water management, and significantly upgrade the appearance of the space. These improvements would also represent a major step toward a greener, healthier, and more resilient community environment.
Fairhazel Gardens

- Widening pavements on Goldhurst Terrace at the junction with Fairhazel Gardens, to reduce the pedestrian crossing distance.
- Adding 2 cycle hangars outside of Likewise Community Centre on Fairhazel Gardens to accommodate high demand from residents for cycle hangar provision.
- Extending the dockless bike hire bay outside of Likewise Community Centre on Fairhazel Gardens to accommodate increased use by residents and visitors.
- Adding continuous crossings which show pedestrian priority across Coleridge Gardens on Fairhazel Gardens to give pedestrians safer and more accessible crossings.
- Widening the pavement by 1C Fairhazel Gardens. To do this, we would need to relocate the car club bay to Goldhurst Terrace.
- Adding benches on Fairhazel Gardens for people to stop and rest.
- Adding new cycle stands on Fairhazel Gardens to increase cycle parking availability for residents and visitors to the area.
- Adding a new bin outside of 1C.
- Introducing new plants and rain gardens on Belsize Road to improve biodiversity, provide shade and reduce the risk of flooding, in line with the Borough’s Climate Action Plan.
Loudoun Road

- Adding a raised zebra crossing with widened pavements on Loudoun Road, approaching the roundabout, to give people a safer and more accessible crossing.
- Adding benches on Loudoun Road for people to stop and rest.
- Introducing new plants and rain gardens on Loudoun Road to improve biodiversity, provide shade and reduce the risk of flooding, in line with the Borough’s Climate Action Plan.
Hilgrove Road at the junction with the nearby roundabout

- Adding benches on Hilgrove Road for people to stop and rest.
- Adding new cycle stands on Hilgrove Road to increase cycle parking availability for residents and visitors to the area.
- Adding a new bin on the corner of Hilgrove Road,
- Introducing new plants and rain gardens on Hilgrove Road to improve biodiversity, provide shade and reduce the risk of flooding, in line with the Borough’s Climate Action Plan.
Belsize Road (northern and southern exits) at the junction with the nearby roundabout:

- Relocating the zebra crossing on the northern exit of Belsize Road to be closer to the junction with Fairhazel Gardens, to better match pedestrian desire lines and reduce walking distance.
- Adding a raised crossing on the southern exit of Belsize Road outside Tesco to make the crossing safer and more accessible for everyone.
- Adding benches on Belsize Road (northern exit) for people to stop and rest.
- Introducing new plants and rain gardens on Belsize Road (northern exit) and on the island on the roundabout to improve biodiversity, provide shade and reduce the risk of flooding, in line with the Borough’s Climate Action Plan.
Fairfax Road at the junction with the nearby roundabout:

- Adding raised crossings with widened pavements on Fairfax Road approaching the roundabout, to give people safer and more accessible crossings.
- Adding benches on Fairfax Road for people to stop and rest.
- Adding a new bin outside of No.85.
- Introducing new plants and rain gardens on Fairfax Road and on the island on the roundabout to improve biodiversity and reduce the risk of flooding, in line with the Borough’s Climate Action Plan.
Parking changes
Making the above changes would require the removal of a total of 2 resident parking spaces in the area. We are proposing to remove 1 resident parking space on Goldhurst Terrace. This street is located in the CPZ (Controlled Parking Zone) CA- R, where there are currently 1574 resident parking spaces and 1515 active resident permits. We are proposing to remove 1 resident parking space on Loudoun Road, which is located in the CPZ CA-K. In CA-K, there are 1048 resident parking spaces and 948 active resident permits. Therefore, in both CPZ’s there is sufficient capacity of resident parking spaces for the number of active resident permits in this area.
No waiting at any time restrictions (double yellow lines) are proposed between 1 Fairhazel Gardens to 46 Belsize Road to prevent blocking of the road.
No other changes to waiting and loading restrictions are proposed.
Adding plants
Planting at various locations is proposed, including rain gardens along Fairhazel Gardens and at several junctions where we are proposing widening the pavements. We are proposing to add up to 8 rain gardens across the area to improve biodiversity and reduce the risk of flooding.
The photo below is an example of a Rain Garden in Camden.

The proposed changes are illustrated in the Fairhazel Gardens and Loudoun Road Area Consultation Plans document. We have also put together a photo guide that shows what some of the proposed changes could look like, such as a parallel zebra crossing and raised continuous crossings. Links to these documents are provided at the bottom of this page.
