The green line walking route between St Pancras International Station and Moorfields and UCL Centre for Eye Health

Overview

We want our streets to have more safe space for everyone to walk and cycle, for children to get to and from school safely and healthily, for businesses to be able to flourish, to reduce carbon emissions from vehicles and for you to be breathing cleaner air.

We want our streets to provide a lasting legacy of greener, safer, healthier travel.

As 69% of households in Camden do not own a car and public transport use remains much lower than before the pandemic, we know that safe and easy walking, cycling and scooting routes are more important than ever. Supporting and encouraging those who are able to walk and cycle, by creating safer streets will ensure that there is more space available on public transport and on our roads for those who need it the most.

The proposals

Moorfields Eye Hospital at City Road will be moving its services to a new centre at the southern end of St Pancras Way. This new centre will be called Moorfields and UCL Centre for Eye Health and will open to patients in summer 2027. To help patients find their way, we are proposing new signs and a walking/wheeling route to the new centre. We have been working in partnership with the developer to deliver a planning obligation in the Section 106 legal agreement for a signed walking route between the new centre and the preferred transport hub at St Pancras International Station. The aim is to make it easier and safer for people, especially those with visual impairments, who want to walk independently to and from the new centre.

We would like to make changes that:

  • Provide a dedicated walking route along Midland Road, Pancras Road, and St Pancras Way with a green line marked on the pavement and Legible London wayfinding signs to make it easier and safer for people to walk to and from St Pancras International Station and the new centre. The green line will mark the last half mile of the journey for patients. The green line walking route will follow the pavement on the west side of Midland Road as the pavement on the eastern side is not wide enough to be signed as a walking route. Otherwise, green line walking route will follow the pavements on the east side of Pancras Road and St Pancras Way. More information on Legible London signage is included in the next section.
  • Provide seating along the walking route to provide places for people to stop and take a rest.
  • Improve the existing zebra crossing on Midland Road next to St Pancras International Station to make it easier and safer for people to cross the road.
  • Introduce a new mini zebra crossing on Midland Road next to St Pancras International Station to make it easier and safer for people to cross the cycle track and the taxi rank when walking to / from the nearby bus stop.
  • Provide continuous pavements (where the pavement material continues over the road to show pedestrian priority – more information below) on Midland Road at the junction with Brill Place and on Royal College Street at the junction with College Place. This would make it easier and safer for people to cross the road. The proposal for Brill Place has already been approved as part of the Brill Place Green Mobility Hub project.
  • Change the traffic signals timings where Pancras Road meets Midland Road to make it easier and safer for people to cross the road.
  • Improve the existing zebra crossing on Pancras Road next to Goldington Crescent and add a parallel cycle crossing to make it easier and safer for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the road.
  • Relocate bus stops and introduce bus stop bypasses (see photo guide for example) on Pancras Road and Royal College Street to make it easier and safer for people to get to and from the new centre. This would also make it easier and safer for cyclists passing buses while they are waiting.

Legible London Wayfinding Signs

We have provided a network of Legible London signs designed to provide better information across Camden for people who want to walk. Legible London has been developed to help both residents and visitors walk to their destination quickly and easily. The signs include maps and offer a consistent experience and information about distances between areas.

Legible London signs are also integrated with other transport options so, for example, when people are leaving the train station, they can quickly identify the route to their destination.

We work with a range of organisations representing disability groups to ensure the Legible London design is as inclusive as possible. For example, the Legible London maps show steps and pedestrian crossings.A photo of a Legible London wayfinding sign is provided below. Continuous pavements at junctions

We are proposing to add continuous pavements on Midland Road at the junction with Brill Place and on Royal College Street at the junction with College Place. Continuous pavements are uninterrupted pavements that extend across a side road. They aim to give the visual impression of priority to pedestrians over motor traffic and make it safer for people by reducing traffic speeds and conflicts between road users, thereby improving safety for pedestrians and people who cycle. You can see an example of what a continuous pavement looks like in the photo below.

After the consultation, a decision report will be produced and published online via our website. Local residents and stakeholders will be notified of the outcome. The report will consider a broad range of information including officer observations, consultation responses, relevant policies, and other data/information.
