Oval Road and Gloucester Crescent Safe and Healthy Streets Consultation

Closed 19 Mar 2024

Opened 27 Feb 2024

Overview

We are seeking your views on changes proposed at the junction of Oval Road and Gloucester Crescent.

We want our streets to have more safe space for everyone to walk and cycle, for children to get to and from school safely and healthily, for businesses to be able to flourish, to reduce carbon emissions from vehicles and for you to be breathing cleaner air.

We want our communities to be prepared for the changing climate and provide a lasting legacy of greener, safer, and healthier travel with streets resilient against the impacts of climate change.

In line with our Camden Transport Strategy, Climate Action Plan, and Clean Air Strategy and Clean Air Action Plan, and to continue supporting safe, healthy, and active travel, we have been making changes across Camden as part of our Safe and Healthy Streets Programme.

As 69% of households in Camden do not own a car we know that safe and easy walking, cycling and scooting routes are more important than ever. Supporting and encouraging those who are able to walk and cycle, by creating safer streets will ensure that there is more space available on public transport and on our roads for those who need it the most.

Introduction

We are proposing changes at the junction of Oval Road and Gloucester Crescent that will make crossing the road safer and more accessible for all. We also want to introduce planting and rain gardens that will reduce local flood risk and increase local biodiversity. You can see an example of a rain garden in the photo guide.

Currently the junction of Oval Road and Gloucester Crescent is approximately 30 meters wide. This means that people who want to cross Gloucester Crescent have a large distance to cross.

The proposals at this junction are as follows:

  • Shortening the crossing distance across Oval Road and Gloucester Crescent by widening the existing pavement, making it easier and safer for pedestrians to cross the road at this section of the junction.
  • Introduction of two informal pedestrian crossings, with widened pavements to reduce the crossing distance, that would make crossing Oval Road easier.
  • Cycle stands, rain gardens and new trees will be introduced on the widened pavement, which would increase opportunities for cycle parking and help reduce local flood risk and increase local biodiversity.
  • Introduction of raised continuous pavement crossing across Gloucester Crescent and Regent’s Park Terrace, that would highlight pedestrian priority, and increased accessibility for everyone. You can see an example of a raised continuous pavement in the photo guide.
  • Introduction of speed hump on Oval Road to reduce vehicle speeds, making it safer for pedestrians using the crossings on this road.
  • Introduction of double Yellow lines with no loading/waiting around the junction of Gloucester Crescent and Oval Road and along Oval Road, to ensure space for pedestrians that would otherwise be blocked by vehicles.
  • To facilitate these changes, it is proposed to remove 2 resident permit holder parking spaces on Oval Road and approximately 65 metres of Single Yellow Line, to help increase pedestrian priority and safety.
