West End Lane - Safe and Healthy Streets Consultation

Closes 11 Dec 2025

Opened 13 Nov 2025

Overview

We’re working in partnership with Transport for London (TfL) to propose improvements along West End Lane, between Cleve Road and Fawley Road to:

  • improve bus journey time reliability
  • improve pedestrian safety and accessibility
  • reduce congestion
  • make it safer for people cycling
  • make the area nicer to enjoy

We want our streets to have more safe space for everyone to walk and cycle, for children to get to and from school safely and healthily, for businesses to be able to flourish, to reduce carbon emissions from vehicles and for you to be breathing cleaner air.

We want our streets to provide a lasting legacy of greener, safer, healthier travel.

As 69% of households in Camden do not own a car and public transport use remains much lower than before the pandemic, we know that safe and easy walking, cycling and scooting routes are more important than ever. Supporting and encouraging those who are able to walk and cycle, by creating safer streets will ensure that there is more space available on public transport and on our roads for those who need it the most.

To do this we have some proposals for improvements in the West End Lane area including:

  • Adding Plants and improving the look and feel of the area - New mini parks with wildflowers, trees and seating at the West End Lane junctions with Hemstal Road and Sherriff Road. These spaces would provide more attractive, vibrant, and welcoming environments for residents and visitors
  • Adding a right-turn waiting space for vehicles - Making this change at the junction of West End Lane and Iverson Road would allowing turning vehicles to wait without blocking through traffic, reducing congestion and improving bus journey time reliability
  • Optimising the traffic signal timings - Improving the traffic signal timings and coordination between junctions and pedestrian crossings would enhance bus journey reliability and reduce delays
  • Changing waiting and loading restrictions - New double yellow lines at all junctions (which means no waiting or loading at any time) between Fawley Road and Cleve Road would reduce congestion and make it safer for people crossing the road and driving by being able to see more without vehicles blocking the view
  • Widening pedestrian crossings - All signalised pedestrian crossings would be widened to improve accessibility and safety, making it easier to cross particularly for those with mobility needs
  • Adding continuous pavements - This is where pavement material continues over the road showing pedestrian priority and improving the look and feel of the area. This includes at the junction of West End Lane and Hemstal Road.
  • Adding Early cycle release signals - These give people cycling a head start ahead of motor traffic, making it easier for them to see and reducing the risk of collisions with vehicles. We would also like to add Advanced Stop Lines at junctions with signals which are safe spaces where people cycling can sit and wait ahead of the general traffic giving them more visibility and making cycling safer.
  • Creating a delivery space for Tesco/Sainsburys – By shortening a Paid For parking bay to create a 10m long delivery area with double yellow lines and single blip on the right side at the entrance of Lymington Road and at the entrance of Fawley Road.
  • Adding a cycle lane on Hemstal Road - A contraflow cycle lane (which runs in the opposite direction to general traffic) on Hemstal Road between Hilltop Road and West End Lane would improve the connectivity and safety for people cycling in the local area.
