Chester Balmore Housing Development - Proposed area wide improvements
Overview
We are seeking your views on the Council’s proposals to improve the streets around the new
Chester Balmore housing development (at the junction of Chester Road and Raydon Street).
Chester Balmore is the first new housing project to be developed by Camden Council in over 20 years. The original properties were out of date, expensive to maintain and underused. The new homes are being delivered as part of the Community Investment Programme that aims to provide a mixture of rented homes, shared ownership homes, and privately owned homes. The project is funded in part by a GLA grant and in part from the sale of private homes within the development.
The development will encourage people to use public transport and walk and cycle. The development is served by the C11 bus network which offers a frequent service via Chester Road. A large secure bicycle store will also be provided within the development for residents to use.
In addition, no parking will be provided within the development and. new residents will not be entitled to an on-street residents parking permit.
The proposals have been developed to improve access to and from the new housing development but also to benefit local residents in accessing the library, bus stops, Brookfield Primary School and the local children’s playground.
Specific proposals to improve road safety for children going to and from Brookfield Primary School have been included following discussions with the school. Both Croftdown Road and Chester Road would be made safer to cross.
The proposals, shown on the plan enclosed, include the following:
• Narrow the junction between Raydon Street & Chester Road, and move one zebra crossing from the junction to outside Brookfield Primary School on Chester Road.
• Widening the pavement and raising the road on Raydon Street close to the entrance to the children’s playground.
• Widening the pavement on Croftdown Road close to the infant’s entrance to Brookfield Primary School.
• Provide 3 general disabled bays, two on Balmore Street and one on Raydon Street.
• Widening the pavement on Chester Road outside the housing development next to the bus stop.
• Provide a new loading bay on Chester Road outside the housing development.
• Replace the solo motorcycle bay on Croftdown Road with a permit holder bay.
