Overview

A Masterplan for the Future

In September 2015 we held community and stakeholder engagement events to find out what long term improvements could be made at St Pancras Gardens. We ensured a range of views were captured and a variety of interests and needs were represented.

We have developed a master plan design to provide an overall vision for the future of the Gardens. This identifies the priority themes, needs and aspirations for when funding becomes available. The plans also consider the heritage value of the site and the Council’s priorities for managing and maintaining the open space.

Priority improvements you mentioned were:

  • Reviewing the poor path layout and improving accessibility
  • Building a more accessible entrance at the Camley Street side
  • Providing more seating for visitors in sunny spots
  • Enhancing biodiversity and creating a sensory space for a variety of groups to enjoy
  • Installing way finding signage for visitors
  • Improving vehicle access for special occasions and park maintenance
  • Having a dedicated area for external events and activities.

We have developed an overall vision on the attached design plan and report (available to download below) that addresses these priorities by the following features:

  • Changing the pathways to improve movement through the park and maximise green space e.g. reducing path widths, installing softer surfaces and creating informal mown grass pathways
  • Creating ramped entry with handrails at the Camley Street side to improve accessibility
  • Additional seating, in the southern part of the site
  • Improving biodiversity e.g. bug/bird boxes, meadow areas, and introducing a variety of planting to give year round colour
  • Providing a sensory/therapeutic garden to create a calming space for relaxation and offer potential volunteer opportunities
  • Improving connections via a potential new entrance at the Southern edge
  • Enhancing visitor experience with improved way-finding signage
  • Creating a hard surfaced area to facilitate access for events and activities.

Next Steps

The plans will be finalised in June 2016 and we will provide further updates on park noticeboards before any future improvements take place (subject to funding).

We would welcome feedback on the plans either by completing this short online survey or sending your comments by email/telephone using the contact details on the right.

Deadline for feedback: Thursday 2nd June 2016.
