Somers Town School Streets Additional Safe and Healthy Streets Proposals
Overview
Somers Town Healthy School Streets – Road safety, accessibility and public space improvements
Overview
We want our streets to be safe spaces for you to walk and cycle, for children to get to and from school safely and healthily, for businesses to be able to flourish, to reduce carbon emissions from road transport and for you to be breathing cleaner air. We want to ensure that when we invest in our streets it provides a lasting legacy of greener, safer, healthier travel, helping us deliver our wider Transport Strategy objectives.
In November 2024, the Council made a decision to make the trial Healthy School Streets traffic restrictions in the Somers Town area permanent. Healthy School Streets restrict traffic at drop off and pick up time making it safer and easier for children to get to and from school. When we engaged the community about the Somers Town Healthy School Streets during the original trial period, we gathered feedback from residents about what additional improvements they would like to see in the area. This included requests for more planting and improvements to the look and feel of the area, seating, better crossings, additional cycle parking and removal of parking near junctions. In the decision report for making the school streets permanent, we committed to considering more changes to respond to these ideas. We are now consulting on a new set of proposals based on your suggestions to bring further benefits to the area.
This consultation includes our proposals to implement changes to the look and feel of the area, safety improvements and planting on Aldenham Street, Barnby Street, Bridgeway Street, Chalton Street, Charrington Street, Cranleigh Street, Doric Way, Drummond Crescent, Eversholt Street, Platt Street, Polygon Road, and Werrington Street as part of the Somers Town Future Neighbourhood 2030 programme funded by the Mayor of London.
A map of all the transport projects proposed as part of the Somers Town Future Neighbourhoods 2030 Programme is provided at the bottom of this page.
Consultation Information Session - 27 November 6:30pm - 7:30pm
This session will include an overview of the proposals for the Somers Town Additional Healthy Streets Proposals. You will also have the opportunity to ask us questions on the proposals.
Why your views matter
Your views will help inform a decision about whether to make changes to improve road safety, accessibility, add more planting and improve the look and feel of the area on Aldenham Street, Barnby Street, Bridgeway Street, Chalton Street, Charrington Street, Cranleigh Street, Doric Way, Drummond Crescent, Eversholt Street, Platt Street, Polygon Road, and Werrington Street.
A summary of the proposals is included below. The detailed street by street proposals then follow with design drawings at the bottom of this page where you can also view example images of some of these proposals.
Consultation proposals
New pedestrian crossing and accessibility improvements
- New crossing improvements are proposed to improve safety for people walking and wheeling, priority and accessibility, and to slow traffic speeds. These include:
- New continuous crossings, where the pavement continues uninterrupted across a road, at junctions and vehicle access points to properties.
- New uncontrolled crossing points where the road is raised up to the same level as the pavement
- New zebra crossings
- New “raised tables” at various junctions where the road is raised up to the same level as the pavement making it easier to cross the road and slowing traffic
- Pavement widening to improve accessibility and give priority to people walking and wheeling
- Tactile paving to improve accessibility for visually impaired people
- Removal of guard railing to reduce street clutter and increase pavement width
Look and feel improvements
- New trees, plants and rain gardens (areas of planting that soak up rainwater helping to reduce local flooding) to improve the look and feel of the area, absorb water and increase climate resilience
- New seating, to make the area more accessible and pleasant to spend time in by providing places to stop and rest

Cycle parking
- New cycle parking stands to improve cycling facilities for residents and visitors
- 16 new cycle hangars, which provide 96 secure spaces for residents to park their bikes across Somers Town. This responds to high demand for such facilities in this area amongst residents who cannot securely store bikes inside their homes.
- New cycle shelter to store bikes for community cycling initiatives, to support them to operate sustainably

E-scooter and Cycle Hire
- New e-scooter and cycle hire bays and extension of existing bays, to provide easy access to these shared transport services and reducing street clutter

Parking changes
- Across various streets we are proposing to convert sections of Single Yellow Line to Double Yellow Line to improve road safety in those locations whilst still keeping sufficient Single Yellow Lines where required for loading/waiting.
- Across nine streets, we are proposing some parking bay changes to create new space for road safety/pedestrian improvements, new plants and improvements to the look and feel.
The ratio of resident permits to available parking spaces indicates that there is sufficient capacity on the streets where changes are proposed, or nearby streets, to accommodate the changes. Resident parking on weekends will be further protected as part of the CA-G Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ) trial changes, which will be implemented on Saturday mornings in Autumn 2025, following a prior consultation and decision.
You can read more about these changes and give feedback.
The parking bay changes are summarised in the table below.
